Netherlands Dotted With Windmills

Netherlands is a very picturesque country, dotted with windmills, little churches and grassy dunes. Thanks to the enormous colonial influent in the seventeenth century, the Netherlands enjoyed a Golden Age of prosperity. Nowadays, being one of the most developed countries in the world, Netherlands is also the most populous European country, sixteen million inhabitants are concentrated into an area about the size of southern England.

Great majority of tourists choose its extraordinary capital, Amsterdam for their visit. But dont forget that there are many other important places worth visiting. One should travel to the west of the Netherlands, a region dotted with interesting historical landmarks. Cities that are concentrated in this region, such as Leiden, the port city of Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft, Haarlem, known collectively as the Randstad, offer the visitors great spectrum of tourist attractions and historical sights. Besides big cities of Randstad, life moves more slowly. The southwest part of the country is typically agricultural.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. In 1830 Belgium seceded and formed a separate kingdom. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, but suffered invasion and occupation by Germany in World War II. A modern, industrialized nation, the Netherlands is also a large exporter of agricultural products. The country was a founding member of NATO and the EEC, and participated in the introduction of the euro in 1999.

Netherlands is a small country, but it also represents one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world. The first things that come to mind when you we think about the Netherlands are windmills, tulips and complete freedom to pursuit ones desires. However, there are many other things to see and experience in the Netherlands. This beautiful country is a mixture of the old and the new, the quiet villages and noisy metropolis, the traditions and customs and a pulsing nightlife. Even if the people in Netherlands are traditionally guided by the Calvinist rigid principles, they are very tolerant and encourage freethinking. Netherlands guides itself by a liberal law that accepts the use of soft drugs and prostitution. Netherlands represents a huge attraction for young people because of this liberal law. However, this does not mean that you will not find the Netherlands appealing if you are travelling with your family or if you are not very young. Outside the big cities, the Netherlands is a quiet and peaceful country that has many interesting cultural and historical sights of great interest.

The name of the country means Low Countries. This name is very appropriate because Netherlands is one of the most geographically low lying countries in the world. The English speaking world uses the name Netherlands to describe this country, while the term Holland is mostly used in the German countries.

12 Dutch Universities in the World's Top-500 Universities

An assessment carried out by AllAboutUni.com found that Dutch universities do very well in the World's Top-500 universities. AllAboutUni.com is an independent, global and interactive website where visitors can obtain information about universities (global rankings, student reviews, university news and campus pictures).

The analysis is based on a ranking of the World’s Top-500 Universities produced by the Institute of Higher Education at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Several indicators of academic or research performance are used to establish the ranking, these include staff winning Nobel Prizes, highly cited researchers and articles indexed in major citation indices.

There are 12 Dutch universities in the World's Top-500 universities (2008): University of Utrecht (ranked 47th), University of Leiden (76th), Free University of Amsterdam (101-151), Amsterdam University (101-151), University of Groningen (101-151), Delft University of Technology (152-200), Erasmus University (152-200), Radboud University Nijmegen (152-200), University of Wageningen (152-200), University of Maastricht (303-401), Twente University (303-401) and Eindhoven University of Technology (402-503).

Comparison with the World's Top-500 Overall,
the World’s Top-500 universities are mainly located in Europe (n=210; 40%), the Americas (n=190; 40%) and the Asian/Pacific region (n=100; 20%). The Netherlands, with 12 universities, represents 2% of the total universities in the World's Top-500 universities. If one adjusts for population size (i.e. one calculates the number of universities in the Top-500 per 1 million inhabitants in the country), the Netherlands performs very well compared to other industrialised countries. The countries with the highest number of universities per million inhabitants are the smaller countries in Western Europe (Sweden (1.2 universities in the World's Top-500 Universities per 1 million inhabitants), Finland (1.2), Switzerland (1.0), Austria (0.9), Norway (0.8)) and (Israel) (0.8). The Netherlands comes into the next group of countries with 0.7 universities per million inhabitants (this group includes Denmark, Australia, Hong Kong and the UK). The number of US universities per million inhabitants is 0.5.

Comparison with the World's Top-100universities
Universities in the US clearly dominate the World’s Top-100 universities, with 58 universities. There are 23 European universities, of which two are Dutch (the Universities of Utrecht and Leiden).

Age
The median age of the 12 Dutch universities is 112 years, ranging from 32 years (University of Maastricht) to 433 (University of Leiden). Many of the Dutch universities are young, with six of the 12 universities aged less than 100 years.

Endowments
Endowments can play an important role in the operating budget of universities, as demonstrated by the AllAboutUni.com assessment of the world's Top-25 universities. Only one of the 12 Dutch universities reported an endowment on Wikipedia [accessed 22 November 2008] and this was the Delft University of Technology (€460 million in 2007). This is a relatively small amount in comparison to the World’s Top-25 universities whose median endowment is $5.9 billion.

Conclusions
The overall performance of Dutch universities compared to the rest of the world is very good. Despite not being represented in the World's Top-25 universities, they have a very good overall performance with a high number of universities per million inhabitants in the World´s Top-500. Another positive point is that many of the Dutch universities are young and have progressed to the World's Top-500 universities over a relatively short time period. The strong overall performance of Dutch universities is probably associated with factors like the good management practices, the high level of public (and private) funding available to Dutch universities and the long academic tradition that exists in the Netherlands.

Why Go Camping in Holland?

If it's been a while since your last camping holiday, Holland's campsites will be a revelation to you! Gone are the days when you would have to squelch across muddy fields and then drive to the nearest attraction. A tent or mobile home at Holland's best campsites will see quality entertainment right on your doorstep!

My personal favourite is Camping Duinrell. To me, it's definitely the best campsite in Holland. It's set in the lush woodland surroundings of a nature reserve and boasts its own tropical waterpark and theme park, with plenty of entertainment available in the evenings. It's family friendly and offers activities for both children and adults.

The Fine Weather

While Holland's campsites are unlikely to beat their Spanish equivalents in terms of sunshine, you may be pleasantly surprised by the Dutch weather over the summer months. Between May and September, the average temperature is a warm 17-23 degrees centigrade, and if you choose the more off-season times of April or October, you'll be treated to a temperate 13-15 degrees.

The Things to Do

You're not short of things to do when you holiday in a tent or a mobile home in Holland. If you choose the Camping Duinrell site I praised earlier, you have a theme park right on your doorstep which features a selection of fun rides and attractions. What's more, Duinrell Theme Park is free to those who are holidaying at the campsite, so there's no excuse not to try every ride at least once! If this isn't enough for you, De Efteling Theme Park in Kaatsheuvel is another one worth visiting with exciting rides based around the park's magical fairytale theme.

If white knuckle rides aren't your thing, you may want to consider the Hoge-Veluwe National Park. Covering 5,500 acres and made up of sands, heath and forests, the park showcases a wide range of wild animals including wild boar and red deer. It's an hour and a half drive from my recommended Holland campsites and well worth it for nature lovers.

Elsewhere, Holland is blessed with some truly wonderful cities. Amsterdam is the most famous of course, with its superb range of galleries and museums. It's also a picturesque city to wander round, and visitors can even enjoy the sights via a canal boat tour. Rotterdam is also worth a look, featuring over 30 museums and some truly wonderful architecture. Finally Delft - well known for its blue pottery - is about as idyllic as a town can be. Canals, arched bridges, calm courtyards, pretty churches and imposing mansions are the order of the day here.

With the credit crunch, camping is coming back in a big way, and Holland's campsites deserve to be amongst the frontrunners. Not only are they all of an excellent standard, but camping in Holland allows you to take part in some wonderful activities, and see some world famous sights in the picture-postcard countryside of the Netherlands. Antique Lighting - Very Rare, Mid 18th Century, French Faience Table Lamp

The French 18th century saw the full flowering of decorative art and France led the rest of Europe in artistic expression and high style. It was in the region of Marseille that saw the production of some of the most beautiful examples of French faience. “Faience” being the French name for tin glazed earthenware,

known to the Dutch and English as “Delft” and “Majolica” in Italy.

One of the most outstanding of these manufactories was opened in 1740 by Claude Perrin (1696-1748) & when he died in 1748 it was his widow,

Madame Pierrette Candelot, who took over the management of production. This alone, in the middle of the 18th century, was considered highly unusual.

Under her leadership production flourished, especially the quality of the flower painting. With outstanding foresight Madam Perrin enrolled her faience painters in French art academies to develop and refine the elegant style of flower painting that we can see today. Painting on faience was notoriously difficult, the painter using the glazed faïence surface as the canvas.

The French 18th century was the century of the Rococo and floral painting was expressed in this beautiful style.

The style known as "Décor Floral Naturaliste le Grand Fleur" is naturalistic, although not botanical, informal and yet with a sense of formality. Flower painting of loose bouquets of summer flowers, small sprays and sprigs, quite often with moths and butterflies, ladybirds and caterpillars and it is known that many of the painters picked bunches of flowers on the way to work as models for the day.

The majority of pieces produced are marked with the letters "VP" the initials for the French "Veuve Perrin" which means Perrin's widow. Madame Perrin died in 1793 and production continued, although in decline until 1803.

The manufactory struggled through the violence of the French revolution which finally saw the collapse of the Rococo "Déco Floral".

The lamp delicately painted in a bright palette of enamels with a large loose bouquet of summer flowers and garden insects.The flowers include pink and yellow roses, forget-me-nots, daisies and morning glory.The lamp on a 19th century French ormolu base of Rococo style."

These summer flowers are 260 years old and still as fresh as the summer of 1750!
