HELP! Plaster garden sculpture needs repainting?

I have a beautiful soft plaster donkey, 3 ft long 2 ft hi, with a cart behind it, out in the front garden, a gift from my children. The rain has taken it's toll on the paint of the donkey. I did purchase some exterior craft paints to touch up the spots then I sprayed it with several coats of polyurethane. However, continued rain, even hail a few weeks ago, pitted the surface exposing the plaster. What kind of paint can I use to protect the plaster and what coating or spray should I use to protect it overall? Thanks.
Thanks for the tip Precious Gem. It makes sense that whoever made it didn't seal the plaster before painting it.

Seal the entire piece. When dried buy some
outdoor paint from a home improvement
store. They can mix the paint to any color you want. This should last for 10 years. Oops!
forgot to tell you to lightly sand before sealing.
Sanding will remove the pits left by the hail.

Ceramic Floor Tiles and Why They are Special

Ceramic tiles are special. It's not just because of the fact that they generally make better flooring than carpets or wood, it's no that they keep you cool in very hot summers. There is more to ceramic tiles than what is usually let on.

Ceramic tiles have a long and illustrious history – nearly as long as civilization itself. The first tiles used that have been found are roof tiles dating from 6000 years in 4000 BC. In the Early Helladic House the Tiles, fired terracotta roof tiles has been found at the site in Lerna, Greece. In the Mycenaean Period, roof tiles were documented for Gla and Medea. The Chinese also had ceramic artwork, but they never used tiles in the way that the Europeans or the Middle Eastern nations did.

The Dutch style, otherwise know as the Delft Style of ceramic floor tile making was started in a Dutch town called Delft in 1544. In 50 years, the craftsmanship became so popular and world renowned that the Dutch prospered immensely from it. However, with increased popularity, there was a commensurate increase in competition and the Dutch floundered – all that remained was their style, which slowly changed due to Chinese influence into the blue and white ceramic glazed tiles that we know today. The other major competitor to the Delft Style is the Maiollican Style, crafted by the artisans of Italy and Spain, which are to this day considered among the greatest tile makers in the world.

In the 19th century the British pioneered the mass production of ceramic floor tiles, boosted by the effects of the Industrial Revolution. The British prospered much like the Dutch and much like the Dutch they succumbed to the increased competition that popularity brought. The Americans overtook the British as the main mass producer of floor tiles but were kept on their guard with the ever present availability of English wares.

Today's floors are mostly covered by ceramic tiling as it has proven to have the best cost to upkeep ratio. While there are many types of flooring that are cheaper than ceramic floor tiles, nothing can really compare to negligible cost of upkeep that ceramic tiles bring to the table. They are easy to clean and do not crack easily. They might not have the durability of porcelain or the luster of marble, but they do not have the price either yet they are relatively similar to both. They are better than a Jack of all trades and it is precisely for this reason that they have been an integral part of every major historic event the world has ever seen. Whether it be in the Far East, the Middle East or anywhere else – ceramic floor tiles have been there to keep people feeling good.

So the next time you think about buying new floor tiles for a new room in your home or for a refurbishment of an existing room, think about the versatility of ceramic floor tiles. Think about the longevity of these marvels of human ingenuity and think to yourself... What history will these tiles witness?

Arts And Crafts With Soap Making When You Have Nothing To Do

Soap is an important tool in our everyday lives. We use it to clean almost anything, from clothes to dishes and even ourselves. But just because it is used mainly for cleaning, it doesn’t mean that we can’t use them for decorative purposes. Soap can be molded similar to clay and different colors can also be used. The only difference is that soap will be harder to mold, but it has a more fragrant smell which makes it more appealing to use.

The most important ingredients of soap making are fats and lye. Fats determine the type of soap that will be produced. Some types of fats may make soft or hard, and the amount of lather can also be affected by the type of fat used. Lye mixed with water and used to hydrolyze fat in a process called saponification. An easier way is to use store bought glycerin soap as you will not need to mix lye and fat anymore.

Two ways can be used to make soap. The first method is through the hot process which involves heating of the fats before mixing it with lye water. This is further cooked for around two hours or until the soap is ready. The second method, called the cold process, makes use of the same ingredients but heating of the fats is not done. The fats are just mixed with lye water and allowed to cool. Once cooled, they can be poured into molds that have been dipped in cold water to form the desired shape. The cold process usually produces soap that has longer lasting quality. Glycerin soap on the other hand, can simply be melted and it will be ready to use.

Other things that can be added to your pre-formed soap mixture are fragrance oils or dyes. An example is using citrus fragrance oils if you plan on making soap that is designed to look like an orange. Dyes can also be used creatively to achieve an attractive design. A simple tie dye effect could be achieved by using a stick to stir the dye along with the soap mixture then waiting for it harden.

Even though soap making may seem an easy and safe activity to do, you should always remember that lye is a dangerous substance. It has a strong corrosive effect that could cause burns or blindness on prolonged contact. Fumes are also harmful when inhaled. Gloves and masks should always be used when dealing with this material.

Soap making is a fun activity that even kids can do. It will give them something to do with their hands while stimulating their creative minds as well. Just be sure to keep an eye on them when using lye, or use the safer glycerin soap to make sure that they are safe from the harmful effects of lye.

Chocolate Candy Molds & Chocolate Lollipop Molds?

I'm looking for a company that sells a variety of chocolate candy molds and chocolate lollipop molds. There are no craft stores in my area and the store used to purchase from has recently shut down.

Any suggestions on a reputable company that I can buy from online? I need the molds but am skeptical about the companies I have found online so far (their websites look so cheesy, I don't feel like I can trust them).

Cement Kids Craft

Linoleum prep on garage floor?

My husband and I recently converted our garage into a mudroom/entry kids craft area. It looks beautiful but ran out of$$$ to do the floors. We originally thought we'd have someone tile but it is a secondary entry and we've seem some really high quallity linoleum we've decided it's just as well and more affordable. We have a standard cement garage floor. It is level but has small texture like a ceiling would i guess. Can't we just lay linoleum over it? My husband thinks we have to smooth it. Is there some kind of first layer of lino we can do? I don't want to re-cement the floor.

It needs to be smooth, you can rent cement sanders.
