Concrete Plaster Mold

Need ideas for displaying hockey-puck collection?

What would be an easy/ interesting/ affordable way to display a large, (over 100), collection of hockey-pucks. I'm thinking of a shelf made of of some type of L shaped trim moulding with a grove notched in the inside for the puck to rest and the opposite side attached to wall. I'd like to make it easy for people to pick them up and examine them. The display will be surrounding a game room in basement with plaster over concrete-block walls.
Any ideas?

my son has a large hockey puck collection and we used his old hockey sticks (from tyke to midget) to display the pucks. We screw nailed the sticks onto the wall around the room about four feet about the floor. The sticks were all placed lengthwise the blade side of the stick facing up and the pucks sit across the top of the stick. As he kept collecting, he ended up with two rows of sticks around the room, one row about one foot higher than the other. We have had alot of comments on how good it looks and the pucks can be picked up and put back easily. Perhaps you could ask around and get old used hockey sticks from family or friends.

Filling gaps on drywall - wood and drywall - concrete?

I have a ceiling with edges of drywall ending at wooden beams (oak). How do I fill gaps there? I do I put tape on but straight, not touching the wood? Some gaps are over 2 inches, but at an angle to not be able to get drywall in? It's a room under the roof.

I also have drywall ending at a cement wall. Can I just use plaster and fill the gaps between drywall and cement? What about larger than 1 inch gaps?

Don't fill in the gaps, cut the drywall evenly across where it's suppose to meet the beams. Then cut a new piece of drywall and fit it in, tape and mud the seam.

Where the ceiling meets the cement wall it's best to cover the gap with trim molding.

How to Make your Own Stepping Stones - Step-by-step Instructions

You can gather your own materials and with some smart shopping, make a garden full of stepping stones for the price of a do it yourself kit that will only make one stone. Plus you can get as creative as you want. This is a great family project. One bag of cement/concrete is enough to make several stones. Each child could make their own personal stepping stone for the garden.

Supplies Needed:

Disposable aluminum foil baking pans - cake pans, pie pans - in various sizes and shapes (Tip: To make things more interesting and fun try to find fun shapes like hearts, stars, bunnies, flowers, etc. Shop around holiday times to stock up on fun shapes to make in the spring or summer. Around Easter time you can usually find bunnies, eggs and flowers, Valentine's Day you can find hearts.)

Mortar or quick drying cement/concrete mix

Small rocks, marbles, glass decorator rocks, broken pieces of pottery, small mosaic tiles, or fish tank rocks

Heavy Duty Scissors

A file or rough grit sandpaper

Directions:

1) Gather all of your materials. Most all of the items can be found at dollar stores or craft stores except for the mortar or concrete mix which can be found at stores like The Home Depot and Lowe's.

2) Set out your pans on a level surface outside where they will not get wet for at least 24 hours. I prefer to lay them out on the ground so I don't make a mess on my tables.

3) Mix concrete or mortar following manufacturer's directions.

4) Pour mixture into pans. Leave about ½ inch space from the top of the mixture to the top of the pan. If you have really deep pans, only fill the pan with a mixture of about 1 ½ inches thick.

5) This is the fun part. As the mixture starts to set you need to start putting in all of your items. Be creative with your designs. Push your rocks, glass, marbles, or pieces of pottery firmly into the mixture. You want to make sure they are deep enough into the mixture to stay put but not be covered by the mixture. You can also use a stick to write words into the mixture or have the kids press their handprints in for a cherished keepsake.

6) Allow to set completely. To be safe I usually let them dry overnight.

7) Once stones are dry gently remove them from the pans. Sometimes they don't want to come out so you might need heavy duty scissors to cut the pan away from the stone. Be careful if you have to do this because the foil pan is very sharp. This is why I recommend using disposable pans in case the stones do not want to come out.

If you have any rough or sharp edges you may want to file them down with an old file or some heavy duty, very rough grit sandpaper.Now you can add a more personal touch and fill your garden with unique, hand made stepping stones.

Fibreglass Mouldings

Fibreglass mouldings are specifically designed products manufactured from glass reinforced plastic.

Fibreglass mouldings can be manufactured for most applications in industry, these industries sectors range from, construction, leisure, marine, aerospace, defence, automotive and much more.

Designers, architects, and end-users alike have found that Fibreglass mouldings has few constraints or limitations when it comes to design and can be manufactured to any size, shape, or colour required, these moulded components can display a superior moulded finish that can be made to replicate bronze, stone, wood, granite or any BS or RAL colour required, these great moulded finish's can also be UV stabilised and can withstand environmental extremes when used for outdoor application, also, one of the great things that makes Fibreglass the material of choice is that it can be specifically tailored to meet the end users requirements, be it fire-retardantcy, chemical-resistance, corrosion resistance, or product that can be tailored to withstand specific loads and stresses, basically the applications for Fibreglass mouldings are varied, further more.

Fibreglass mouldings are manufactured with the aid of a mould, the mould is a reverse of the product, the mould can be male or female depending upon the design of the product, the mould is normally made from fibreglass, but can also be made from timber, latex rubber or metal, the mould will require several coats of a mould release agent, remember before you run the mould an additional coat of PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol) release agent is also good practice, this will enable the first product to release from the mould with out the risk of sticking.

Now the mould is prepared and ready to go to work, its time to manufacture a Fibreglass moulding,

1. This process starts with the mould being painted or sprayed with gel-coat of the desired colour; the polyester gel-coat is the coating that will provide the pre-coloured finish to the moulded component, the gel-coat is allowed to cure, but will remain tacky, this is good, the tacky finish will enable a good bond for the laminate,

2. Once the gel-coat has cured, a layer of glass fibre is then applied to the back of the gel-coat, the layer of glass-fibre is then saturated with resin, the saturated glass-fibre is then rolled with a special roller, this is to remove any trapped air, and to consolidate the glass-fibres, more layers of glass-fibre can be applied and consolidated until the required thickness is achieved, the laminate is then left to harden and cure.

3. Once the laminate has cured, the product can be released from the mould, the product is normally left in the mould for twenty four hours, this ensures that the product has no imperfections, like, print through from the glass-fibre, shrinkage in the gel-coat ect, but remember, if there are any defects like the one's just mentioned, these can all be rectified by a skilled operative.

What type concrete do I buy to pour my own stepping stones in molds? The kind with large gravel doesn't work

I'd give the 10 to doug. I use it all the time for Deck footers as well as Fence post support. It's easy, not expensive, and allows small amounts at a time, if you choose.

Custom DIY Concrete Stone Instructions Will Save Your Money

Here is how to make real-looking stone with concrete for pennies each! With these instructions, molds available everywhere, concrete, and items found in your garden shed, you can make thick stone or veneer for about $0.55 a square foot, depending on thickness. Why pay around $6.00 at retail? And you can make the stone any colors you want. Make it in your garden shed, garage, basement, or out in the backyard. Anyone can do it! Just follow these simple step-by-step instructions.

ITEMS NEEDED: molds - mixing tub or wheel barrow - bags of premix concrete - colorant - water - shovel - plastic wrap or sheet - plastic gloves and eye protection - mold release - desire.

MAKING CONCRETE STONE: You can make concrete castings almost anywhere, and depending on temperatures, at almost any time. The main thing is to stay above freezing temperatures during the mixing and curing process. Once concrete is cured, temperature is not a factor. The cast stone can be stored outside with no problems. After mixing, and during the curing process, it is best to produce the stone in as moderate a temperature as possible, even though concrete sets up and cures at almost any temperature.

CONCRETE MOLD PREPARATION: First, apply a mold release to the molds. Use a commercial mold release or a light vegetable oil. For ease, spray the release from a Dollar Store plant-misting sprayer directly into the mold. Spread the oil and wipe any excess out with a fine sponge or cotton cloth. A very light coating is all that is required. To get a natural random shading effect, sprinkle powdered colorant into the oiled mold. Shake it from side to side. Use a brush to spread the colorant around the inside of the mold. The most natural looking results are obtained with a random spreading and dusting of a couple of colors.

MIXING PREMIX BAGS OF CONCRETE: If you have a very large project, or want to use a basic concrete mix using Portland cement, or if you want to make a lightweight concrete, basic concrete mixes are available on Google, and concise step-by-step instructions normally come with molds.

The bag of concrete has mixing instructions to follow. You want a stiff mix, but not one that is too dry. It should not flow like pancake batter. Too thin a mix will give you a weak stone. To color your stone, blend powdered colorant into the dry concrete first. If using a liquid colorant, add it to your batch water first, then proceed as normal. When your concrete is mixed and colored, fill the molds halfway. Immediately bounce your molds up and down to help compact the concrete mixture, and break up any air pockets to insure a solid base. Then fill molds the rest of the way. Excess liquid will come to the surface during this process. Do not remove this water as it helps with hydration. Now put your filled mold on a level surface away from direct sunlight. Cover with plastic. Keep the concrete wet for as long as possible. The hydration process is what helps cure the stone. Leave the filled molds alone for about 24 hours. The concrete will get stronger the longer it's curing in the mold.

DEMOLDING: Normally, you can demold your stone after 24 hours. Place your mold flat with the face of the mold up. Gently lift the mold off from the corners. It will normally come off your stone easily. If it sticks, gently press the center and each mold corner lightly to help loosen it. There, you have it! If you are going to pour more stone right away, apply mold release to molds and follow the procedure as before. Use mold release to help dislodge any color or concrete that may have stuck to your molds.

CURING YOUR STONE: You should now put your stones in a protected area and cover them with plastic again to keep the moisture in. Let them cure for a week or two before applying a sealer. For exterior applications, use a penetrating sealer to help prevent staining. If it's an interior wall application you don't even have to seal it. A topical sealer can be used for floors if desired. Your stone can be installed about a week after demolding if you need to.

How do I make moulds for plaster of paris/cement models?

How do I make these moulds as I would like to make some pretty unusual designs. Can any of you also advise on some good websites for ideas or suppllies of these type of moulds?

Liquid rubber (latex) is commonly used and is available from the craft/art/hobby stores (Hobbycraft stores). I have also used plasticine (lightly dusted with talcum powder) to make impression moulds from hard objects.
