Majolica - also spelled Maiolica - is the beautiful ware prepared by tin-glazing earthenware and firing it a second time.After the first firing, the bisque is dipped into a bath of fast drying liquid glaze. When dry, the glazed piece is ready to be hand painted. A final firing at 1690° Fahrenheit will make the glaze interact with the metal oxides used by the painter to create the deep and brilliant translucent colors specific to majolica. This technique originates in the Middle East in the 9th century. By the 13th century majolica ware was imported into Italy through the Isle of Majorca, headquarter of the trade between Spain and Italy. The Italians called it Maiolica, erroneously thinking it was made in Majorca. They were fascinated by this new way of making ceramics and soon started to copy the process, adapting it by their own creativity and traditions.

The rise of Italian majolica in Europe was fast and reached its peak of artistic quality throughout central Italy during the Renaissance - late15th and early 16th centuries. Majolica or Italian Maiolica designates tin glazed pottery dating from the Renaissance often associated with certain regions of Italy like Deruta, Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino and Orvieto. The name majolica was derived from Majorca, the port from which majolica originally was traded. Italian majolica and Italian Ceramics are world renowned because of their master craftsmanship and durability. Some of the famous names in this art are: Franco Mari, Eugenio Ricciarelli and Mastro Giorgio Gubbio who is known as the creator of some of the finest Deruta Maiolica over the history. The Ceramic Plate - Why a Popular Collectors Item

Collectors of ceramic plates truly enjoy their hobby. They have good reason to. Ceramic plates are beautiful, somewhat easy to accumulate, often very affordable, and if you have a good eye for a bargain, they very often increase in value. Italian Ceramics are world renowned for their beauty that stems from the attention to detail that is shown by the artisans who create it. The lifestyle and the love of country and family of Italy are always reflected in the artwork that you see on fine Italian ceramics. The word “ceramics” originates from the Greek word “keramos,” meaning, “clay.” However, clay has not been the main component of Italian ceramics for quite some time now. Italian ceramics can be made from any one of three common substances: Earthenware: Also know as bisque or biscuit, earthenware is fired at low temperatures of 1800 to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit. It is usually reddish or white. Due to its high porosity, earthenware must usually be glazed to enable it to hold water.

Earthenware pieces have been found that date back to 1400 to 1200 BC, making this craft the oldest pottery in history. Stoneware: It is made of a heavier clay mixture, which can be fired at much higher temperatures of 2200 to 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. It is dense, impermeable, and hard enough to resist scratching by a steel point. It is brownish gray and it can be used both blazed and unglazed and is ideal for cooking and baking. Porcelain: It is made from specific clay containing kaolinite, and fired at high temperatures ranging between 2200 to 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. It is hard, impermeable (even before glazing), white, translucent and resonant.

The strength, utility, and durability of all three of these substances are reasons why Italian ceramics make excellent gifts to anyone for any occasion. When buying, or ordering Italian ceramics as some Italian gifts to someone else, or to yourself, be sure to deal only with credible and verifiable dealers. Unfortunately, there seems to be some “dealers” who present their items as Italian ceramics, when in fact their pieces are made elsewhere. These individuals tend to use the same pictures repeatedly. They use lots of “fine print” explaining the actual source and origin of their ceramic ware if you are lucky.

Another simple way you can insure that a dealer is selling authentic Italian ceramics is to inquire about the company name with the Better Business Bureau. While even a legitimate company can encounter the occasional customer complaint, you will want to eliminate those companies that have many complaints made against them that are not resolved. A reputable, credible Italian ceramics dealer will understand why you might ask them for references, specific item information, and the like. Good Italian ceramics should be seen as an investment, and like any good investment, you owe it to yourself to make sure that you are investing in genuine quality artisanship.

Gladding, McBean & Co. formed in 1875 to produce sewer tile for the then expanding American West.

Gladding, McBean & Co., began production of Franciscan dinnerware in 1934 at their plant in Glendale, California.

Over the years they acquired several regional potteries and expanded their product lines several times to include roof tile, decorative art tiles, garden pottery, and art pottery.

Their entry into the dinnerware market was made possible in part by the arrival of Frederic and Mary Grant.

Frederic was a ceramics engineer and previously had been president of the Weller pottery in Ohio.

Mary was a successful stylist whose designs drove the first two decades of production at Franciscan.

A number of other artists created designs and modeled shapes but the Grants worked together in their successful control of Franciscan products.
