can you use plaster of paris in ceramic molds?
I work with disabled individuals and recently we had a wonderful offer. Someone donated 200 ceramic molds for the individuals to use to make different projects with. I don't know much about ceramic molds so I was wondering if anyone could help me. Due to the disabilities some of the individuals have it would not be a good idea to have a kiln or anything like that around. Plus the easier it is for them the better. What I was wondering is, if I go to wal-mart and purchase plaster of paris, can I use it in the molds? The woman who donated the molds said that she thought I could, but I wanted to double check. I was thinking that it would be alot easier for them to pour the plaster in the molds, let it harden, and then paint it. I know that the projects wouldn't have that shiny look like they would if i used clay and a kiln. I just wanted to double check and make sure this idea would work.
Probably yes although you would have to check each mold and would certainly have to apply separator like spray cooking oil or English soap to keep the wet plaster from sticking to the plaster mold.
These molds were presumably used for clay slip which is a creamy liquid with lots of clay in it. When the mold is filled with slip, the dry plaster pulls water out of the clay at the interface and after a few minutes a layer of clay has formed and the remaining liquid can be poured out. After a few more minutes the shell of clay as gotten less wet and started to shrink from the plaster and the parts of the mold and be removed and the shell handled carefully for further work or drying. It is fragile until fired.
Because most plaster does not shrink much in going from liquid to solid (and you might ask an artist or ceramic supply which ones shrink more, which will be the opposite of what most people want) you may find that some molds try to hold the plaster - this will be especially true if some have a bowl or cylinder shape where the two sides are too parallel to each other (not enough relief as it is called.)
